SCWDC RECREATION RACING PROGRAM

A Word from the Recreation Racing Chair
Terry Brotherton

Recreation Racing is back! The races will follow the NASTAR format. Contact Terry Brotherton at tbroton@hotmail.com for further information.

SCWDC has offered a recreational racing program over the years and has encouraged our members to participate. Recreational racing helps improve your skiing. It also adds another dimension to the fun of skiing. We present a number of awards at the end of each season, with the competition based on a set of rules that establish the eligibility criteria and define the various award categories.

International Ski and Snowboard Association:
The program this year includes participation with a formal race program as well as individual participation, either on a SCWDC ski trip or on your own. SCWDC as a member of the ISSA participates in various ISSA races throughout the year.

NASTAR Participation:
In addition, SCWDC members can participate in recreational racing throught the ski season. Many of our trips include specific race days, in which you can strut your stuff to your fellow trip participants. All you need to do is race NASTAR, making sure you register yourself as a member of the SCWDC using NASTAR's Ski Club Team feature. Here are the rules for this-year's program (It is significantly different from last winter):

Eligibility:
The program is open to every club member in good standing (your SCWDC membership dues must be paid-up through the current season).

Registration:
Simply register for racing with NASTAR, and be sure to write SCWDC in the space for ski club name. Then, every time you race NASTAR, your results will show up under your name and will be credited to the SCWDC. In fact you may already be registered. Check SCWDC's team rooster to verify your information on the NASTAR site

NASTAR Medals and SCWDC Awards:
You may win a NASTAR medal with each run. In addition, if your trip leader has told you racing is included, trip racing ribbons are available after the race day. Everyone who races NASTAR three or more times during the season will qualify for the annual SCWDC awards. All races must be completed by Saturday, April 2, 2005 to be counted for our awards. Your races will count whether they're run during a club trip or a trip made on your own.

Race Location & Scoring:
You receive a different handicap each day you race at any of the approximately 100 participating NASTAR ski areas across the country. For an in-depth explaination of NASTAR's scoring system see What is a NASTAR Handicap? on the NASTAR website.

NASTAR Registration
For your race to count, you need to initially register with the SCWDC's team rooster. From then on, you just tell the race dude at the top of the course your NASTAR number and the result are automatically placed on your record as well as the teams. It's important to remember to include yourself as a member of the SCWDC Race Team at registration. There’s no need to register again if you registered and raced last winter. Together with a password you select, your registration number will also let you modify your personal information (change your name, address, e-mail, teams, etc.) on their database.

On-Line NASTAR Results
Within 24 hours from the time you race, your time and handicap are supposed to be uploaded by the resort to the NASTAR on-line results. If you’re already a registered NASTAR racer, the data will be added to your previous record. You can also check the data for all others that have raced that day at that resort. You’ll be able to see how you stack up against other racers at participating resorts, in your state of residence, and nationally.

Ski Trip Race Day
If your trip leader has indicated that you will have a trip race day, be prepared to race on one of the days the resort has NASTAR open (see locations above). After Race day, the race coordinator will gather all SCWDC race results from the resort for trip ribbon presentation.

Award Categories:
The program recognizes the top three handicapped racer for both men and women

Payment
Unless your trip leader specifically tells you that the Club is paying for the race, it is your responsibility. Most NASTAR races can be pre-paid either at the ski school or in some cases at the race shack.
