BIKING PROGRAM

Bicycling Tips
Frank Peņaranda

Be Prepared & On-time: Please be sure your bicycle is in good working condition and leave home in plenty of time to arrive at the starting point at least 20 minutes prior to the designated start time. This will ensure that you and your bike will be ready to leave on time. Ride leaders are under no obligation to wait for late arrivals.

Bring the Necessities: Bicyclists are strongly encouraged to wear a helmet on all SCWDC rides and to carry identification, money, mirror, water, pump, patch kit or spare tube, and basic tools (e.g., tire levers, allen wrenches, screw driver). Layered clothing and rain-gear are also encouraged.

Ride Smartly: Please ride predictably, courteously and alert. A bicycle is classified as a vehicle, therefore you must observe all state and local traffic laws. Ride with the flow of traffic as far to the right as is safely possible, stop at all stop signs, obey all traffic lights and pause at yield signs. Cross railroad tracks at a 90 degree angle, give verbal and hand signals to alert other riders to road hazards, when passing, slowing, stopping, or making a turn. Pass cyclists on the left. Ride no more than two abreast. Ride single file when a vehicle is approaching.

Know Your Strength & Skill Level: Read the ride description beforehand to ensure that your endurance and skills are up to it. Call ride leader when in doubt. Do not attempt a ride with sore knees or back, nor with severe breathing problems such as colds and congestion. You may find yourself truncating a ride and heading back alone (or worse).

Weather policy: Listen to the weather report, call (703) 260-0405. If there is more than a 50% chance of rain or if the forecasted high temperature is less than 50 degrees, or very windy, the ride will be cancelled. As a general rule, if in doubt, call the ride leader. Have fun and volunteer to lead a ride.
