Major changes to posh U.S. slopes
Forbes - On New Year's Eve in Vail, Colo. the last flakes of a foot of new powder fell by 8 a.m., revealing a crisp blue sky and snow-laden ponderosa pine branches bent earthward. By 11 a.m. the four-person lifts raised long lines of skiers to the summit.
But for some families heading up the slopes their journeys ended there. Kids, many helmeted and armed with snowboards, headed toward jumps and terrain parks while their parents looked for easier cruiser runs. This scene is playing out at resorts across the country. Though people born between 1946 and 1963 have for years fueled the $5 billion ski industry, many are expected to soon exit the sport.

Mark Moses likes to book family trips many months in advance to lock in prices. In November, the 49-year-old finance executive pre-paid $189 per night for a room at the four-star Empire Hotel in New York City on Priceline.com. But over the months leading up to his April trip, he cringed as he watched New York hotel prices steadily plummet, currently hovering around $150 a night for a comparable four-star hotel.
"I was a little annoyed that I was so impatient," says Mr. Moses, of Pleasanton, Calif.

By William Triplett Special to The Washington Post Sunday, December 10, 2006; P01
"Basically, we take you to the edge of terror and then bring you back."
Not the most inspiring words I've ever heard from a ski instructor, but certainly among the more attention-getting -- and, I must say, more accurate.
