Description
Citi Open Tennis (formerly Legg Mason Tennis Classic)
Date and Time: Saturday, August 3, 10 AM - read article for details
Leader: Joan Zawacki, 703-723-6321, 703-927-5031, 44084 Natalie Terrace #201, Ashburn, VA 20147; Ann Webster, 571-239-6046. Make checks out to SCWDC and mail to Joan.
Cost: $50 members, $52 guests
Location: William HG Fitzgerald Tennis Center, 16th and Kennedy Street, NW Washington, D. C. in Rock Creek Park. Drive or take Metro and take the convenient shuttles. Full directions at www.citiopentennis.com. Check the website for updates.
NOTE: "Coolers (hard and soft), picnic baskets, water jugs, cans or glass bottles are not permitted on the site."
Legg Mason Tennis Classic is now CITI Tennis. This year should be an 'ace' year to focus on Tennis, unencumbered by the Olympics! As usual, we have excellent seats for the semi-finals.
This is where tennis is "at" in Washington (besides Fairfax Racquet Club, of course). It's hot, though, so wear cool clothes and a brim hat, hydrate frequently, and wear sunscreen liberally even in cloudy weather. Note: the sun will be at our backs as the sun sets in the PM.
Hopefully we will see some star quality tennis, there are many committments from top players. Visit www.citiopentennis.com for WTA and ATP player participation. Good tennis on the side courts, too; usually good food, and lots of high spirits no matter who wins. Relax and cheer on your favorites...and stay for the duration!
You can arrive as early as 10 AM and picnic with fellow tennis fans in the stands or purchase food at the various restaurants. The leader will set up a meeting place to gather at 1130. Check back on this site for the meeting place, closer to the event.
Play begins at noon, not 1 PM as stated in the June/July magazine. The day session on Saturday was chosen, rather than the usual night session, becuse we see more tennis - four matches i.e., singles semifinals for the men, two doubles semifinals for the men and a doubles semifinal for the women on both the stadium and grandstand courts.
TRANSPORTATION: WHICHEVER WAY YOU TRAVEL TO THE TOURNAMENT, LEAVE EARLY, GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF EXTRA TIME. PARKING IS ALWAYS LIMITED. METRO AND SHUTTLE BUS ARE PROBABLY THE BEST WAY TO GO.
