Description

Point of Rocks to Harpers Ferry

Date & Time: Saturday, October 31, 9:30 AM
Length & Difficulty: About 25 miles roundtrip; Relatively flat; Easy
Leader: Ron Trueworthy [ron_trueworthy at yahoo.com ]
Location: Point of Rocks RR Station, 1500 Potomac Avenue, Point of Rocks, MD, 21777

We’ll meet at the far end of the parking lot of the architecturally-interesting train station in Point of Rocks, MD (Gothic Revival, built in 1873, and on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973) for a leisurely ride on the C&O Canal towpath to Harpers Ferry. We will enjoy lunch, and a demonstration firing of artillery of the period, then return to our starting point. This is a social, friendly ride along a pretty flat section of the C&O Canal towpath which has a thick tree canopy. A hybrid bicycle is ideal for this ride, but a mountain bike or road bike should work too. Lunch can be purchased at one of the tourist-oriented sandwich shops in Harpers Ferry. Leader rides a slow "C" pace. It would be wise to bring a helmet, water, bike lock, and money for lunch. If raining: ride is no go. NOTE: Because this section of the towpath can be muddy, if there has been recent rain this ride may be cancelled. Check the "Ride News" forum on the PPTC website for last-minute cancellation news.
